NEW DELHI: Calling upon people across the country to do one hour of “shramdaan” (voluntary labour) for cleanliness on October 1 beginning at 10am, PM Narendra Modi on Sunday said this would be a true tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on the eve of his birth anniversary.
In an effort to encourage mass participation for this “big event” on cleanliness, called Ek Tareekh Ek Ghanta Ek Saath (One Date One Hour Together), the garbage vans used for picking up household waste will make announcements and play jingles, besides special mobile caller tunes will be laun-ched to sensitise people, sources said.
Modi spoke about the event in two programmes — Mann ki Baat and during the launch of Vande Bharat trains — urging people to participate in the campaign. “You can also join this cleanliness campaign in your street, or neighbourhood or at a park, river, lake or any other public place, and cleanliness must be undertaken wherever an Amrit Sarovar has been built,” he said.
TOI has learnt that recently cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba held a marathon meeting with top officials from the Centre and states to make this first such simultaneous cleanliness drive a big success.
District administration and urban local bodies have been roped in for this mass activity during the one hour next Sunday.
The mega cleanliness drive calls upon citizens from all walks of life to join in actual cleaning activities of public places like market spaces, railway tracks, water bodies, tourist locations and religious places, the housing and urban affairs ministry said. Every town, gram panchayat and all sectors of the government like civil aviation, railways, information and technology, and public institutions will be facilitating cleanliness events led by the citizens, it added. Government entities will spread the message via social media, influencers and brand ambassadors of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
“We have created a website swachhtahiseva.com where all programmes will be available. Government entities will publish the spots where the drive will be undertaken, and even NGOs, RWAs and private entities can apply to hold such programmes to the district or municipal administration. The volunteers can click pictures of their activities and can also upload them on the site,” said an official.
The ninth anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission launched by PM Modi is on October 2.
