NEW DELHI: In her forthcoming book, “Pranab My Father,” Sharmishtha Mukherjee, daughter of former President of India and late Congress stalwart Pranab Mukherjee, talked about interesting things from her father’s political life, offering a behind-the-scenes look into his relationships and perspectives.
The book shared that Pranab had some concerns about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi‘s ability to lead and was disappointed with how often the latter would disappear.
The narrative also sheds light on Pranab’s observations about Rahul’s political maturity during visits to Rashtrapati Bhavan. There’s a funny incident in the book where Rahul showed up for a morning meeting, but his office had mistakenly told him it was in the evening. To this, Pranab Mukherjee sarcastically remarked, “If Rahul’s office can’t differentiate between ‘am’ and ‘pm’, how do they hope to run the PMO one day?”
While describing Rahul as “very courteous” and “full of questions,” Pranab noted that he felt Rahul was “yet to mature politically.”
The book hinted at Pranab’s advice for Rahul to join the Cabinet and gain governance experience, advice that, as the book implies, went unheeded.
Sharmishtha also delved into a pivotal moment in 2004 when Sonia Gandhi decided not to nominate her father for the prime minister’s role. Pranab’s cryptic response to Sharmishtha’s query about Sonia Gandhi’s decision was, “No, she will not make me the PM.” Despite this, the book reveals that Pranab did not hold grudges or bitterness towards Sonia for choosing Manmohan Singh.
The book also provided a rare glimpse into Pranab’s diary entries, offering readers a first-hand account of his emotions during critical political incidents. On Sonia’s withdrawal from the prime ministerial race in 2004, Pranab’s diary entry reflected the country’s surprised reaction and the eventual decision to have Manmohan Singh as the Prime Minister.
Sharmishtha also shared her father’s desire to become the prime minister. However, the book suggested that Pranab Mukherjee accepted that this dream might not come true.
“Pranab My Father” is slated to be launched on Pranab Mukherjee’s birth anniversary on December 11, 2023, promising readers an insightful exploration of a prominent political figure’s life, ambitions, and relationships.
