NEW DELHI: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday said Muslim League saved Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from drowning in Wayanad in Kerala in the last Lok Sabha elections.
Rahul had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad in Kerala. While he lost in Amethi to BJP leader Smriti Irani, he won the Wayanad seat.
“Rahul Gandhi lost in Amethi but won in Wayanad. Asaduddin Owaisi did not contest elections there. I did not have any deal with the BJP there. He won from Wayanad because there is the Muslim League there. Muslim League saved him from drowning,” Owaisi said.
The AIMIM leader said he was happy not to be a part of the opposition bloc INDIA as he would have felt suffocated there.
Owaisi slammed INDIA parties for not opposing the BJP on their ideology.
“They told that if they give us a ticket, they won’t get any Hindu vote. I am saying this openly, they say this behind closed walls,” he said.
Owaisi disagreed with opposition claims that sectarian politics against Muslims started since 2014.
He claimed that the environment has been rough for Muslims since the beginning and sectarian politics against the community has been going on since 1950.
The AIMIM chief urged the Muslims to contest elections and said “You will never win if you don’t contest elections fearing defeat.”
“I think Muslims should participate in elections. You won’t win until you fight. Even if you lose, standing up in elections is necessary. You need to lose twice or thrice before you win,” he said.
