NEW DELHI: India’s openers, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, achieved the milestone of the most hundred-run partnerships in ODIs for the year on Sunday in the World Cup 2023 match against the Netherlands at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
In 2023, Rohit and Shubman formed hundred-run partnerships on five occasions, securing the top spot on the list. Following them closely are Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who hold second place with four 100+ partnerships.The third position is occupied by Sri Lanka’s Dimuth Karunaratne and Pathum Nissanka, while the fourth place is held by Kusal Mendis and S Samarawickrama.
In the match against the Netherlands, India’s captain Rohit played a notable innings, scoring 61 runs from 54 balls with a strike rate of 112.96. During his innings, Rohit hit eight fours and two sixes. Gill also made a significant contribution, scoring 51 runs from 32 balls, including three fours and four sixes.
Unfortunately, Gill was dismissed in the 11.5 overs by Paul van Meekeren, while Rohit departed the crease in the 17.4 overs after Bas de Leede claimed his wicket.
On the match front, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul hit attacking centuries to power India to a mammoth 410-4 against the Netherlands. The top order contributed significantly, with charismatic Virat Kohli hitting 51.

This marked Kohli’s seventh fifty-plus score, including two centuries, in the ongoing World Cup. He shares this distinction with Sachin Tendulkar, who achieved the feat in the 2003 World Cup (comprising one century and six fifties), and Shakib, who also registered seven fifty-plus scores in the 2019 World Cup, including two centuries and five fifties.
In a first, India became the first nation in World Cups whose top five batters scored 50+ scores in the same innings.
