DEHRADUN: The under-construction tunnel collapse in Uttarkashi district on Sunday, which has left 40 workers trapped, brings back memories of similar incidents in Uttarakhand.
The Uttarkashi tunnel, being constructed under the central government’s ambitious Char Dham project, will join the Gangotri and Yamunotri axis under the Radi Pass.
With a total length of 4,531 metres, it’s being built at an estimated cost of 853 crore.
The same part of the tunnel, which caved in early Sunday morning, had collapsed in 2019. However, the scale of the collapse was less severe as compared to the latest one and no worker got trapped. It only led to a delay in construction.
In February 2021, over 100 workers died in one of the deadliest incidents in the history of Uttarakhand. They lost their lives after they were trapped inside a tunnel in Tapovan-Vishnugad hydel project following a flash flood. The rescue operation continued for months and the bodies were recovered from inside the Head Race Tunnel till last year.
Last month, nearly 40 workers had a narrow escape after a fire broke out inside the under-construction tunnel of the Rishikesh-Karnprayag railway project in Rudraprayag district.
According to officials, the incident occurred after a chemical kept inside the tunnel caught fire.
