Samsung has introduced a new generative AI model, Gauss, its answer to OpenAI’s GPT and Google’s LaMDA at its AI Forum. The AI model can generate text, images, and even code. This will be integrated into the upcoming Galaxy S24 phones and is said to run locally on devices.
Samsung has named the model after Carl Friedrich Gauss, a German mathematician known for his contributions to number theory and geometry. The company’s research unit, Samsung Research, developed Samsung Gauss, which comprises three tools –Gauss Language, Samsung Image, and Gauss Code.
What are Samsung’s Gauss models capable of
Samsung’s Gauss Language model has the ability to comprehend human language and respond to queries, similar to OpenAI’s GPT model. The company says that the model can assist with email composition and editing, summarising documents, and translating languages.
The Gauss Image is a generation model very similar to DALL-E. It can also be used to convert low-resolution images to high-resolution ones. Then, there is Samsung Gauss Code, which aims to help developers write code more efficiently. It works with Samsung’s code assistant, “code.i, “and supports code description and test case generation through an interactive interface.
Gauss could bring AI prowess to Galaxy S24 phones
The company says that it is currently using its Gauss model internally among staff, and it plans to make it available to the public “in the near future.” However, no specific timeline has been provided yet. However, expectations are that the model could be integrated into the coming slate of hardware, including Galaxy S24 phones, which are said to debut in January next year.
The Exynos 2400, Samsung’s newest mobile chip, is optimised for AI. It boasts a 14.7x boost in AI performance and enables text-to-speech generation.
Samsung says that it is taking steps to ensure the safe use of AI through its AI Red Team. This team focuses on areas such as data collection and AI model development. It’s worth noting that Gauss, Samsung’s latest AI, is an “on-device AI” that processes data on the device rather than sending it to the cloud. This approach is considered better for privacy and speed.
