Samsung has launched the S Pen Creator Edition, its rival to the Apple Pencil, in the United States. The Creator Edition of the S Pen is a slightly upgraded model than the one that comes bundled with Samsung tablets, and comes at $99. Samsung says it is its most advanced S Pen yet.
The S Pen Creator Edition was initially announced at the launch of the Galaxy Tab S9 series in July 2023, and it was recently launched in South Korea. This edition of the S Pen is targeted towards creative professionals, providing features like extra tilt sensitivity and improved grip.
The S Pen Creator Edition is compatible with Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and higher, Galaxy Note10 and higher, Galaxy Tab S Series, and PCs that already support the existing S Pen. It cannot be used with any Galaxy Z series of folding devices.
The S Pen Creator Edition looks very similar to the Apple Pencil. The S Pen Creator Edition is only available in white and comes with a single button on the side that can be used to interact with tools in creative applications, such as switching between the pen and eraser functions. The stylus is battery-free and doesn’t require charging. Additionally, the flat side of the stylus can magnetically attach to compatible Galaxy Tab devices for storage, similar to an Apple Pencil. It carries an IPX4 rating, which means it can withstand light splashes, but it provides less protection than the submersible IP68 rating found on the cheaper S Pen.
The S Pen Creator Edition has its own set of creative-focused features that make it a great choice for artists and designers. However, the Creator Edition of the S Pen comes with some limitations similar to the vanilla S Pen. The Air Commands, which allows users to quickly access different functions while hovering over the screen, are not supported.
