SRINAGAR: Four terrorist associates — one affiliated with Ansar Ghazwatul Hind (AGH) and three with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) — were arrested with arms and ammunition at security checkpoints in Kashmir Valley last week, police said Sunday. While the AGH affiliate was apprehended in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on November 26, the LeT trio was arrested in north Kashmir’s Baramulla on November 25.
On November 26, AGH affiliate Farman Khursheed Wani from Gargen, Shopian, was moving from Kundalan towards Shopian when a joint team of police, Army’s 44RR and CRPF’s 14Bn arrested him at a checkpoint in Handipora Shopian crossing. A pistol, two pistol magazines, 10 rounds of 9mm calibre and a cell phone were seized from him.
“During preliminary questioning, Wani disclosed that he was working as an AGH associate and had been tasked with carrying out attacks on security forces in the district,” said a police spokesperson. A case in this regard was registered at Shopian police station and an investigation was launched.
On November 25, while a joint patrol and checking drive was underway at Kalgai near Jhula footbridge by Baramulla Police along with troops from Army’s 13 SIKHLI and BSF’s 185Bn, two suspects headed from Kamalkote, Uri, towards the national highway carrying bags were intercepted. Security forces frisked the men — identified as Kamalkote residents Zameer Ahmad Khanday and Mohammad Naseem Khanday — and seized three Chinese grenades and Rs 2.5 lakh cash. A case was lodged in this connection at Uri police station, said a police spokesperson.
During questioning, the LeT duo disclosed that they had acquired the grenades and cash from Manzoor Ahmad Bhatti, also a resident of Kamalkote, to execute acts of terror. When Bhatti was quizzed, he corroborated the same and led cops to a spot from where one Chinese grenade and Rs 2.17 lakh cash were seized. Bhatti was subsequently arrested.
