‘Should think of consequences …’: Taliban warns Pakistan against ‘cruel’ treatment of Afghans

NEW DELHI: Taliban have issued a stern warning to Pakistan over its treatment of Afghan refugees amid Islamabad’s sweeping anti-migrant crackdown.
The Taliban-ruled Afghanistan has asked Pakistan not to be “cruel” to the Afghans leaving the country.
The statement comes after Pakistan asked all undocumented refugees to leave the country, including nearly 1.7 million Afghans.
The decision by Pakistan sent ties with Taliban plunging to an all-time low, with Kabul describing it as “unacceptable”.
“The regime in Pakistan should not be cruel to the Afghans, not seize their personal property and assets,” Tolo News quoted acting deputy defence minister Mohammed Yaqoob Mujahid as saying.
The Taliban minister said that Afghanistan will attempt with all its capacity to prevent such treatment of its citizens and won’t allow anyone to seize and steal the the personal property of Afghan brothers.
Mujahid said that Pakistan’s anti-migrant policy is severely impairing the bilateral ties between the two countries.
“So, the Pakistani regime should think of the consequences of whatever it is doing. It should plant as much as it will be able to reap,” he said.
The Taliban minister also urged the United Nations to intervene amid the ongoing migrant crisis, saying that the refugees should be sent back to the country with “dignity”.
The UN and other organisations should push Pakistan to end the current situation towards the refugees, the Taliban minister said.
Nearly a quarter of a million Afghans have fled Pakistan ahead of the October 31 deadline to avoid potential imprisonment.
With the threat of being jailed, tens of thousands are now making their way towards border regions, concerned about potential detention and expulsion.
In an unprecedented crackdown, Pakistani security forces are now conducting thorough searches to find any undocumented foreign residents living in the country.
The move comes amid the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, an offshoot of Taliban, stepping up terror attacks targeting security forces in Pakistan.
In the last two days, Pakistan has witnessed at least four such attacks against its security personnel across various regions.
The Pakistan government as well as its military have repeatedly warned Afghanistan for providing safe haven to the terrorists involved in these bombings.
Over the years, legions of Afghans migrated to neighbouring Pakistan over decades of conflict during the Soviet invasion, the following civil war and the US-led occupation.
As many as 600,000 have arrived since the Taliban seized power in Kabul in August 2021 and imposed their austere version of Islamic law.
Taliban authorities have been trying to tempt back those who left, despite the nation suffering from a massive scaleback of aid following the collapse of the US-backed government.
