The law commission too has been looking into completing a report recommending ways to make simultaneous polls possible. Its past deliberations in 2018 remained inconclusive with lack of consensus between political parties. The panel to explore one-nation-one poll was notified early September and it was later briefed on existing constitutional provisions guiding electoral laws by the legislative secretary and the law secretary-the latter also acting as the secretary of the panel.
A few days after notification home minister Amit Shah and law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal called on Ram Nath Kovind ahead of the convening of the full committee meeting which comprised of seven other members including the home minister, firmer finance commission chairman N K Singh and former J&K chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. Former LS secretary general Subhash C Kashyap, senior advocate Harish Salve and former CVC Sanjay Kothari are the other members of the committee.
