Soumendu Ray had been the cinematographer for 21 of Satyajit Ray’s films, including the iconic “Pather Panchali.” He started as a camera caretaker in the iconic film, later evolving into a distinguished cinematographer.In 1960, he was entrusted with the responsibility of the camera in Satyajit Ray’s “Rabindranath Tagore.” Their professional bond remained unbroken until Satyajit Ray’s demise in 1992.

Soumendu Ray’s contributions extended beyond his work with Satyajit Ray. He worked as a cinematographer in various other notable films of Tapan Sinha and Buddhadeb Dasgupta. His skillful camera work left a lasting impression on audiences.
Soumendu Ray remained unmarried throughout his life, choosing to live a solitary existence. He was supported by two caregivers at his home. Although he stopped working as a cinematographer in 2000, he continued to impart his knowledge and expertise in cinematography to students in different institutions. He earned respect and recognition both nationally and internationally for his contributions to the film industry.
Soumendu Ray’s passing has cast a shadow of grief across Bengal. According to reports, his final rites are scheduled to take place at the Keoratola Crematorium in Kolkata later today. Soumendu Ray’s legacy lives on through his works and the knowledge he shared with aspiring filmmakers.
