Spam Calls: How Google is making Pixel’s Call Screen feature better

At the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones launch event, Google highlighted several AI features, including the ones coming to its Call Screen feature. The company said that the enhancements in the feature will allow users to better determine which calls they want to skip and those they want to take.
What’s new in Call Screen feature
Pixel’s Call Screen feature allows users to skip taking calls that do not warrant their attention. Google showed off a demo in which the AI answered calls on users’ behalf engaging in a more natural way.
According to the company, the improved AI in the Call Screen feature is helping Pixel owners receive 50% fewer spam calls on average, by answering calls from unknown numbers in a more natural-sounding conversation.
The Call Screen assistant identified itself and alerted the caller it was recording the call on behalf of the recipient – addressing the criticism the company received when it launched the feature to book appointments and reservations.
Critics called out Google saying that the feature seemed to be trying to pretend to be human and didn’t identify itself as a bot.
The demo also showed that after the callers explain why they’re calling, the AI decides how to respond on behalf of users. For example, when a user received a spam call saying, “Hi, you’ve won an all-expense paid trip to the Caribbean. Press 8 to claim your prize now.” Call Screen’s AI responded, “Unfortunately the person you’re calling cannot take your call right now, have a nice day.”
In another example, an airline representative called a user and Call Screen feature asked multiple questions to ascertain that it was not a spam call and said, “Okay, let me try to get the person you’re trying to reach on the line.”
Google claimed that Call Screen will also soon offer contextual replies so users can respond with a tap without even taking the. This will arrive through a Pixel feature drop later in the year in the US and other select markets.
