NEW DELHI: Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday opened the debate on women’s reservation bill in Lok Sabha and said that the party supports the bill.
“On behalf of Indian National Congress (INC), I stand in support of Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam 2023,” she said.
The Congress parliamentary party chief demanded that the women’s quota bill be implemented immediately with sub-quota for SCs, STs, OBCs.
Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal moved the bill for passage in the Lok Sabha, saying it is a very important bill and urging members to pass it with unanimity.
The government on Tuesday introduced a Constitution amendment bill seeking to reserve one-third seats in Parliament and state legislatures for women. The reservation will come into effect only after the completion of the delimitation exercise. It was the first bill introduced in the new Parliament building.
Here are the key quotes from her speech:

  • Congress demands that women’s quota bill be implemented immediately with sub-quota for SCs, STs, OBCs.
  • It is difficult to gauge the extent of patience of women. They never think of taking rest. How long will women have to wait?
  • Any delay in implementing women’s reservation bill will be gross injustice to Indian women.
  • Immediate implementation of women’s reservation bill by removing all obstacles not only necessary but also possible.
  • This is an emotional moment of my own life as well. For the first time, Constitutional amendment to decide women’s representation in local body election was brought by my life partner Rajiv Gandhi. His dream is will be fulfilled with the passage of this bill.
