Tap-And-Go: Apple may allow rivals to access iPhone tap-and-go payments tech in EU

[ad_1]

Apple may be opening up its tap-and-go mobile payments system in Europe to avoid potential fines. Apple has reportedly offered to let rivals access its mobile payment technology, Near-Field Communication (NFC), in an attempt to settle antitrust charges filed by the European Commission.
Citing three people familiar with the matter, a report by news agency Reuters said that the EU competition enforcer accused Apple of unfairly restricting access to NFC, making it difficult for competitors to develop their own mobile wallet services on Apple devices.
Apple Pay is one of the leaders in the market, partnering with over 2,500 banks and 250 fintechs in the region.
The European Commission is expected to seek feedback from rivals and customers in January 2024 before deciding whether to accept Apple’s offer. The timing and specifics of the market test remain subject to change.
