NEW DELHI: The BJP has launched a fresh attack on the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government in Telangana led by chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) ahead of the October-November assembly election in the state.
KCR has been in power in Hyderabad since 2014 and the BJP seeks to reap the benefits of anti-incumbency sentiments against the BRS government in the southern state.
Though the morale of the BJP workers in Telangana has weakened following the party’s disastrous performance in the assembly election in another southern state of Karnataka held in May, it appears to galvanise its cadre and pose a strong challenge to the KCR government.
Prime Minister Narendra sounded the poll bugle during his visit to Warangal in Telangana on July 8. He launched frontal attack against the KCR government.
He said the BRS government specialises in four things – abuse Modi, further the dynastic rule, destroy Telangana’s economy and indulge in rampant corruption.
Labelling the KCR government as highly corrupt, PM Modi accused it of constantly criticising and berating him and the central government.
Secondly, he claimed that they focused on consolidating power within a single family, attempting to establish themselves as the ultimate authority in Telangana.
Thirdly, the prime minister criticised the government for impeding the economic progress of Telangana. Lastly, he alleged that corruption had engulfed the state, stating that virtually every project in Telangana was tainted by allegations of corruption.
He alleged that the BRS rule in Telangana is a story of unfulfilled promises. “We have heard of nations and states cooperating on development issues but what happened between the Delhi government and Telangana government, and the parties that head them is a first – an alliance for organised corruption,” the PM said.
PM Modi cautioned the people of the state about the ruling family in Telangana, which he accused of being embroiled in scams and facing ongoing investigations. He urged the crowd to remain vigilant and not fall prey to their tricks.
Slamming the BRS and Congress for their dynastic politics, PM Modi said, “Dynasts only worry about the future of their sons and daughters. They do not care about the future of other children of the country or of Telangana. All these family-based parties, their foundation stands on corruption. The whole country has seen the corruption of the family-based Congress. Entire Telangana is watching the corruption of familial BRS. Be it Congress or BRS, both are fatal for the people of Telangana.”
Further, the PM mentioned the Telangana State Public Service Commission scam and the prolonged wait for government recruitment faced by Telangana’s youth for the past nine years. He lambasted the government for exploiting government jobs to benefit its leaders rather than serving the people.
On the other side, he highlighted the work and vision of the BJP-led central government to serve the poor of Telangana from agriculture to housing. “Improving lives of the tribal communities and other marginalised sections of society is our priority and it reflects in our work,” he said.
The PM laid the foundation stone for several crucial infrastructure development projects worth around Rs 6,100 crore in Warangal.
They included the 176-km long national highway projects worth over Rs 5,550 crore. He also laid the foundation stone for upgradation of the 68-km long Karimnagar-Warangal section of NH-563 from existing two-lane to a four-lane configuration. This will help in improving connectivity to Hyderabad-Warangal industrial corridor, Kakatiya Mega Textile Park and SEZ at Warangal.
The prime minister also laid the foundation stone of the Railway Manufacturing Unit, Kazipet. To be developed at a cost of over Rs. 500 crores, the modern manufacturing unit will have enhanced Wagon manufacturing capacity. It will be equipped with latest technology standards and facilities such as Robotic Painting of Wagons, state-of-the-art machinery and plant with modern material storage and handling. It will help in local employment generation and development of ancillary units in nearby areas.
On July 11, BJP’s head of information and technology department Amit Malviya also launched an attack against the KCR government. In a tweet, he said, “While KCR and family live in opulence, mid day meal staff in Hyderabad beg for food to cook for children.”
He alleged that KCR only makes announcements and all schemes remain only on paper. He lamented that it was a sad state of affairs in Telangana.
Malviya also alleged that more than 25 lakh children across 28,606 government schools in Telangana have not had a proper meal in the last few days because workers are demanding better benefits and officials are mum. “How many course meals do you think KCR and family have for lunch in their lavish farm house?” he asked.
Taking a swipe at KCR’s Telangana Model, he said sanitation staff are on strike, villages are stinking and power staff are demanding that salaries be paid on time.
He alleged that the mid-day meal cooks, after failing to get government attention, plan a ‘Chalo Hyderabad’ agitation. “Professors, suffering under BRS, pray for the government to change…. Unemployment and widespread misery has led to a sharp increase in participation of underage children in the labour force,” he said, adding, “Telangana is in a royal mess with KCR and family looting the resources with both hands and pushing the state in utter chaos.”
