SRINAGAR: Suspected terrorists fired on a group of migrant labourers, injuring three of them, in Gagran area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district late Thursday evening.
Bihar natives Anmol Kumar, Pintu Thakur and Heralal Yadav are in hospital. Doctors described Anmol’s condition as critical.
Additional DG Vijay Kumar said two masked attackers entered the rented accommodation of the labourers in Shopian’s Gagren area around 8.45pm and opened fire just after the group had arrived from work and were settling in their quarters.
The injured were rushed to Shopian District Hospital and later referred to Srinagar’s SMHS Hospital. Anmol, who was critical, was hit in the right arm and abdomen. The other two are said to be stable.
All three workers hail from Supaul district of Bihar, J&K police said, adding the Gagren area has been cordoned off to nab the attackers.
National Conference vice-president and ex-CM Omar Abdullah tweeted: “Very unfortunate. I unreservedly condemn this attack and send my best wishes to the injured. I hope they make a complete and speedy recovery.”
BJP J&K spokesperson Altaf Thakur “strongly denounced the gruesome attack on unarmed non-local labourers”, saying it reflected the “frustration, inhumanity and cheapness of the terrorists”.
The attack came amid intelligence reports about a terror strike and an advisory to all political leaders to restrict movements. It also followed a spate of terror strikes targeting migrants this year.
A shadow Lashkar group killed a migrant labourer, hailing from Udhampur of Jammu, at Ashajipora in south Kashmir’s Anantnag on May 30 this year. The worker, Deepu, worked at an amusement park. Over a month earlier, a local, Aqib Ahmad, was shot at and injured in Anantnag’s Bijbehara area on April 24.
