The Supreme Court has threatened to resort to “the coercive arm of the law” upset by the silence of states and Union Territories to its over three-month-old order seeking details of measures taken to ensure menstrual hygiene of girl students in government and aided schools, in an important step for increasing female literacy, in the states and the UTs.
On Monday additional solicitor general Aishwarya Bhati said only after all states and UTs provide basic statistics about implementation of menstrual hygiene measures in schools, the National Health Mission would be able to formulate a national scheme for the menstrual management scheme for schools across the country. The bench has offered a last opportunity to the states and UTs to file their responses by August 31.
