NEW DELHI: A gunman in Rotterdam unleashed a wave of violence in the Dutch city on Thursday, killing a 14-year-old girl, her mother and a teacher.
Dressed in combat gear, the assailant, a 32-year-old student, fatally shot a 39-year-old woman and her daughter, according to Police Chief Fred Westerbeke’s report.
Subsequently, the shooter proceeded to the nearby Erasmus Medical Center, where he took the life of a 46-year-old teacher working at the academic hospital.
He reportedly opened fire in a flat in the Dutch city before bursting into a nearby medical centre. Fires broke out in both places but were later extinguished.
“The two shooting incidents in Rotterdam have resulted in fatalities. We will first inform family and relatives and will explain more later,” the city police said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter.
Elite police units swiftly entered the hospital in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in pursuit of the armed suspect, who was reportedly in possession of a handgun, according to authorities.
The suspect, aged 32, carried out the attacks, but his motive remains unknown.
Medical personnel and patients were soon evacuated from the hospital while police officers in protective gear moved in. Police helicopters were seen circling overhead.
Medical professionals in white coats could be seen transporting patients on stretchers and wheelchairs.
“First there was a shooting on the fourth floor. Four or five shots were fired. Then a Molotov cocktail was thrown into the education centre,” said a medical student cited by RTL Nieuws.
“There was a lot of panic and screaming. I didn’t hear any shots, just the panic and that’s what I started to act on,” public broadcaster NOS cited another eyewitness as saying.
Rotterdam has witnessed several shootings in the past, often attributed to conflicts between rival drug gangs. In 2019, three individuals were shot and killed on a tram in Utrecht, leading to a substantial manhunt. In 2011, the Netherlands was shocked when 24-year-old Tristan van der Vlis went on a rampage at a crowded shopping mall, killing six people and injuring ten others.
