AHMEDABAD: A metropolitan court on Tuesday acquitted Congress MLA and Dalit activist Jignesh Mevani and six others of the criminal case lodged against them for staging a demonstration and blocking traffic on Ashram Road while raising the demand for improvement in the service conditions of sanitation workers in 2016.
Mevani and his associates were agitating at the Income Tax Circle in the city in 2016, demanding regularization of the jobs of sanitation workers.
They were accused of damaging a police vehicle, shouting slogans and rioting while being taken to a stadium for detention in September that year.The police had filed a chargesheet against Mevani, Mana Pateliya, Ramesh Bariya, Mukesh Patel, Dashrath Pagi, Meesh Narsinh and Darshan Pathadiya.
