A section of students at IIT-Bombay opposed posters that have come up on the campus allegedly segregating eating areas based on food preferences and informally not allowing non-vegetarians.
The Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC), a students’ collective on the campus took to social media, and said, “Even though there is no institute policy for good segregation, some individuals have taken it upon themselves to designate certain mess areas as ‘vegetarians only’ and are forcing other students to leave that area.” The students claimed that many are finding it humiliating. The general secretary (hostel affairs), however, in a mail to residents, clarified there is no designated separate sitting space for vegetarian students. The mail mentions such behavior is unacceptable.
