OpenAI, the company that developed ChatGPT chatbot, held its first developer conference on Monday (November 6). During the event, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made a surprise appearance heaping praise on OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman for building “something magical”.
“Our job No. 1 is to build the best system, so that you can build the best models and then make that all available to developers,” Nadella told Altman.
Soon after OpenAI launched ChatGPT about a year ago, Microsoft announced that it is investing billions in the company.Reports said that the Copilot maker invested $13 billion in OpenAI.
Nadella also said that developers can use its Azure cloud infrastructure for computing and storage. Developers who are building on top of OpenAI can look to the Azure Marketplace to “get to market rapidly,” Nadella said.
Microsoft uses OpenAI’s GPT-4 large language models (LLMs) in its Copilot that powers its products and services, including Windows 11 and 365 productivity suite.
“Our mission is to empower every person and every organisation on the planet to achieve more, and to me, ultimately, AI is only going to be useful if it truly does empower,” Nadella said.
Meanwhile, Altman said that both the companies “have the best partnership in tech” and he is “excited for us to build AGI together.”
“We set up the relationship between the two of us so that we’re very happy when they succeed with a sale and they’re very happy when we succeed with a sale,” Altman said.
GPT-4 Turbo launched
At the event, OpenAI announced a more powerful GPT-4 Turbo model that has a 128K context window. According to the OpenAI, it is “equivalent to more than 300 pages of text in a single prompt.”
The company also announced that GPT-4 Turbo, has been trained with information dating to April 2023, will be cheaper for developers.
