Xiaomi announces HyperOS, to replace MIUI on smartphones

Xiaomi is, after all, ditching MIUI in favour of a new operating system for its devices, which includes smartphones. Dubbed HyperOS, Xiaomi’s new software skin will debut with upcoming Xiaomi 14 series smartphones, eventually replacing the MIUI in the coming months as it rolls out for more of its devices.
Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun announced that the company’s upcoming 14 series will be the first to boot up with the new HyperOS, and production has already begun.

“Today marks a historic moment. After years of collective work, our new operating system, Xiaomi HyperOS, is set to make its official debut on the Xiaomi 14 Series,” Jun, the founder and CEO of Xiaomi, said in a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Alvin Tse, the VP at Xiaomi India, also mentioned that, gradually, this new operating system will replace MIUI in older phones and tablets that currently use it.
“It will come preinstalled with the latest Xiaomi 14 flagship series & will gradually replace MIUI. Can’t wait for this new era of Hyper Performance, fluidity, and connectivity across Smartphones x AIoT!,” posted Tse on X.

Tse also confirmed that HyperOS will be available for smartphones globally and will not be just limited to China. “Yes! Will roll out throughout 2024,” he replied to a post asking him if the global ROM will be available.
It is not known if it would be simply a rebrand of MIUI or a completely new Android skin. Although, in a post, Tse, suggests that it would be the latter. To a reply to his tweet, reading, “Old wine in new bottle?” Tse replied, “completely new rewritten architecture!” We expect the HyperOS to be based on Android 14 for the global smartphones.
Xiaomi began its journey with the MIUI Android interface back in 2010. The latest version of MIUI, MIUI 14, was announced in December of last year. Now, MIUI has a huge global user base of over 564 million monthly active users. But, a decade later, the company is pivoting to a new direction with HyperOS, which promises to bring “Hyper Performance, fluidity and connectivity” across its different products, including smartphones and IoT devices.
The Xiaomi 14 series is expected to launch later this year.
