Formation of Zoram People’s Movement

The Zoram People’s Movement was formed as a coalition of six regional parties: Mizoram People’s Conference, Zoram Nationalist Party, Zoram Exodus Movement, Zoram Decentralisation Front, Zoram Reformation Front, and Mizoram People’s Party. These parties later amalgamated into a unified entity, officially forming the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) in 2018.
Initially, the ZPM aimed to address various issues confronting the people of Mizoram. It originated as a non-political entity with a focus on social concerns and community welfare. The Election Commission of India (ECI) officially registered the party in July 2019. However, the largest founding party, Mizoram People’s Conference, exited the alliance in 2019 when ZPM transitioned into a political party.

2018 Mizoram Assembly Elections: The Political Debut

In the 2018 Mizoram Legislative Assembly elections, the ZPM made its electoral debut, positioning itself as a political alternative to the Mizo National Front (MNF) and the Indian National Congress (INC). Advocating for the reinstatement of a liquor ban, the party contested 36 out of 40 seats and secured victory in 8, along with support from independent candidates. This marked a significant achievement for the relatively new Zoram People’s Movement.

2023 Mizoram Assembly Elections

Moving to the 2023 Mizoram Assembly Elections, the ZPM contested all 40 seats. The elections, held on November 7, witnessed an impressive voter turnout exceeding 80 percent. According to recent exit polls, the party is anticipated to achieve substantial success, potentially winning 28-35 seats out of the total 40.
As the Mizoram Assembly election results are set to be announced today, Monday, December 4, ZPM president Lalduhoma expresses confidence in his party securing an absolute majority in the state.
